Wi-Fi Direct Connection Troubleshooting for iPhone

When connecting a Lawmate device that creates its own Wi-Fi network without internet access, certain iPhone settings may interfere with the connection. Below are the most common causes and how to resolve them.

1. Restart Your Lawmate Device & iPhone

Many connection issues can be resolved simply by restarting both your Lawmate device and your iPhone before proceeding with further troubleshooting.

—————————————————————————-

2. Reset Your Lawmate Device

Press and hold the Default button for 10 seconds, then release and wait until the orange LED starts flashing again.

—————————————————————————-

3. Disable “Private Wi-Fi Address” for the Lawmate Network

iPhone uses a randomized MAC address (“Private Wi-Fi Address”) by default for privacy. Some older or simpler Wi-Fi devices may have trouble handling this properly.

How to do it:

  • Go to Settings → Wi-Fi
  • Tap (i) next to the Lawmate network
  • Disable Private Wi-Fi Address
  • Reconnect to the network

Advantages:

  • Improves stability with certain Wi-Fi devices
  • Resolves many compatibility issues immediately

Disadvantages:

  • Reduced anonymity on that specific network
  • No practical security risk in this type of point-to-point connection

—————————————————————————-

4. Forget the Network and Reconnect

Your iPhone may have saved an incorrect or corrupted network profile for the Lawmate device.

How to do it:

  • Go to Settings → Wi-Fi
  • Tap (i) next to the Lawmate network
  • Select Forget This Network
  • Restart both the iPhone and Lawmate device
  • Reconnect

Advantages:

  • Removes old/incorrect network settings
  • Often effective after firmware updates or previous changes

Disadvantages:

  • Requires re-entering the password

—————————————————————————-

5. Disable “Wi-Fi Assist” (Recommended)

Do you often lose connection after a while? Since Lawmate networks have no internet access, iPhone may automatically disconnect and switch to another Wi-Fi network or mobile data.

How to do it:

  • Go to Settings → Mobile Data
  • Scroll to the bottom
  • Disable Wi-Fi Assist

Advantages:

  • Ensures iPhone actually uses the Lawmate Wi-Fi network
  • Prevents traffic from switching to 4G/5G instead

Disadvantages:

  • iPhone will not automatically switch to mobile data on poor Wi-Fi networks
  • May require manual switching
  • Can reduce convenience in everyday use

—————————————————————————-

6. Check VPN / DNS / Security Apps

VPN services, private DNS servers, or security apps may block local network traffic.

Possible sources of interference:

  • VPN clients
  • Cloudflare Warp / NextDNS / AdGuard
  • Company profiles / MDM
  • Security apps / firewalls

Test:

  • Disable VPN completely
  • Disable private DNS profiles
  • Test the connection again

Advantages:

  • Eliminates conflicts with local network communication

Disadvantages:

  • Temporarily reduced filtering/security during troubleshooting

—————————————————————————-

7. Verify App Access to Local Network

Apple requires explicit permission for apps to communicate with local network devices.

How to do it:

  • Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network
  • Ensure PV Cam Viewer is enabled

Advantages:

  • Required for the app to detect the Lawmate device

Disadvantages:

  • No real downside; this is standard permission for proper functionality

—————————————————————————-

8. Reset Network Settings (Last Resort)

If nothing else helps, the iPhone may have deeper network conflicts.

How to do it:

  • Go to Settings → General
  • Select Transfer or Reset iPhone
  • Select Reset
  • Choose Reset Network Settings

Advantages:

  • Resolves deeper network-related issues
  • Very effective final troubleshooting step

Disadvantages:

  • Deletes saved Wi-Fi networks
  • Removes Bluetooth/Wi-Fi settings
  • Requires network reconfiguration afterward

5. Disable Automatic Mobile Data Switching / Smart Network Switching (Recommended)

Many Android devices automatically switch away from Wi-Fi networks without internet access.

Common Feature Names:

  • Smart Network Switch
  • Adaptive Wi-Fi
  • Switch to Mobile Data Automatically
  • Wi-Fi Assistant

  • May require manual switching in daily use

————————————————-

6. Check VPN / DNS / Security Apps

VPN services, private DNS servers, or security apps may block local network traffic.

Possible sources of interference:

  • VPN clients
  • Cloudflare Warp / NextDNS / AdGuard
  • Company profiles / MDM
  • Security/firewall apps

Test:

  • Disable VPN completely
  • Disable Private DNS
  • Test connection again

Advantages:

  • Eliminates conflicts with local network communication

Disadvantages:

  • Temporarily reduced filtering/security during troubleshooting

————————————————-

7. Verify App Permissions

Android requires permission for apps to access nearby/local network devices.

How to do it:

  • Go to Settings → Apps → PV Cam Viewer → Permissions
  • Ensure the app has all required network/location permissions enabled

(Some Android versions require Location permission for Wi-Fi scanning.)

Advantages:

  • Required for the app to detect the Lawmate device properly

Disadvantages:

  • No practical downside; standard app permission requirement

————————————————-
